Haiti watches Hurricane Felix this week and Gabrielle the next

HaitiAction.net - Port au Prince, Haiti - Even though shifting atmospheric conditions exist that could steer Hurricane Felix closer to Haiti, the current forecast is that the storm center will pass 300 miles south of the island tomorrow night. Later in the week the ridge building to the west - associated with Tropical Storm Henrietta - could turn the storm, more northerly, into the Gulf of Mexico.

As Tropical Storm Felix races through the Southern Caribbean, it quickly gained strength this morning surprising the forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami who - three hours ago - were predicting that Felix might reach hurricane strength no earlier than Monday, September 2.

The strong trade winds which are expected to keep Felix to the south of Haiti could bring the next tropical cyclone - which could become the seventh named storm of the 2007 hurricane season - directly towards Haiti and the DR by next week. This strong tropical wave in the mid-Atlantic — 98L.Invest: 13.4N - 36.9 — has the potential to develop for the next couple of days.

Aug 31 Report: Haiti could see "Tropical Storm Felix" next week

HaitiAction.net - Port au Prince, Haiti - With gusts already appearing at tropical storm strength, a tropical depression (94L heading: 273º) is quickly developing off of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The center of the storm, south of Barbados, is headed directly over the island of Mustique. Currently, the upper level steering currents appear to change the heading of the storm NW directly into Haiti and the Dominican Republic soon after it enters the warmer waters of the Caribbean Sea tomorrow. Strong easterly trade winds, however, are likely to keep the storm on a course similar, but more southerly, to Hurricane Dean

Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected today over the Windward Islands. A US Air Force Hurricane Hunter is on its way to investigate the ominous storm system and the reports from the flight should appear in the NOAA National Hurricane Center advisories later today.

The already drenched mountains of Haiti's southern coast will not have time to recover from the effects of last week's storms and the impact of Hurricane Dean — rains from this system can be expected to cause deadly mudslides and flash floods. Agence Haïtienne de Presse (AHP) reported last week that the death toll of Hurricane Dean reached nine killed by the storm according to the National Office of Civil Protection director, Dieufort Deslorges.

"Mr. Deslorges said Wednesday that more than 4,000 families have been made victims by the disaster, with more than 1,000 homes destroyed and over 3,000 damaged in the South, Southeast, Grande-Anse, Nippes and West regions. Some 40 schools have also been damaged in some of the Departments mentioned above, and plantings have been ravaged. More than 800 people have received emergency shelter, he said. Dieufort Deslorges explained that he is awaiting the disbursement of funds promised by the government before intensifying assistance to the disaster victims." Once this storm reaches tropical storm strength - sustained winds over 39mph - it will become the sixth named storm - FELIX - of the 2007 hurricane season.
