Haiti in danger again of deadly flash floods as late season Sub Tropical Storm Olga approaches

A surprise subtropical storm will hit the storm battered country of Haiti almost two weeks after the close of the 2007 Hurricane Season. After the devastation caused by Hurricane Noel in October - the previous named storm - the conditions have been milder than in recent years.

Tropical Storm Olga is not expected to gain strength but will likely dump an average of 4-6 inches of rain over most of Haiti and the Dominican Republic during the next 24 hours. Rain totals could go higher than 10 inches in the flash flood prone mountains. Olga "has already produced life-threatening flash floods and mudslides in Puerto Rico. The storm is now headed WNW but is forecast to weaken slightly and take a more westerly tack.

According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, "Olga's strongest winds are located well away from the center of circulation - which is a characteristic of subtropical cyclones. Winds of 40 mph extend outward 275 mi (445 km) to the north and northeast of the center."

In October of this season in the aftermath of Hurricane Noel at least 66 persons were killed, an estimated 2,801 homes completely destroyed and above 12,000 damaged. More than 14,000 families have been directly affected by the flash floods and continue to need assistance.
