Tropical Storm OMAR threatens Haiti

Haiti Action.net - Tropical Storm Omar — wandering south of Haiti — was upgraded this morning becoming the fifteenth named storm of the 2008 Hurricane Season at 10:36 AM. While the National Hurricane Center (NHC) is predicting that the storm will eventually take a northeasterly tack it is still unclear from it's current direction — ESE 115˙at 5mph. " …all of the available model guidance indicates that a broad deep mid-latitude trough over the central and western Atlantic will continue to drop southward and gradually pick up OMAR and nudge it to the east during the next 12 hours" states the NHC.

The NHC also notes a significant trend toward rapid strengthening which would have OMAR reaching Category One hurricane strength — 74mph (64KT) — much sooner that the forecast 48 hours. Currently near 50 mph tropical storm force winds may soon hit the Caribbean Island of Curaçao where Jermain Ostiana is reporting that the "…Sea on the South is beating up the shore…" and many trees are falling in the heavy winds.

Tropical Storm Hanna that may have caused as many as 1000 deaths in Haiti was forecast by the NHC in Miami, Florida to travel well north of the storm-battered island, instead Hanna wandered south in the northerly region for several days causing devastating floods and mudslides. Recently Doctors Without Borders reported that one month after the storms, much of the region has seen little improvement and no help despite what other agencies and media-stars are reporting
