Haiti will see flooding danger this week from SANDY

HaitiAction.net - Port au Prince, Haiti — Haiti can expect a week of heavy rainfall from tropical cyclone 99L — soon to be named SANDY — starting in the southern departments. The current slow westerly track is expected to suddenly reverse to the north — similar to Hurricane TOMAS in Oct 2010 — as is common with these late season storms. The tropical wave is quickly organizing and could reach tropical storm strength within the next day as the conditions in this area are ideal for strengthening; with the water temperature 5º above the air temperature (WTMP: 84.7º) to enhance the rising air currents of a tropical cyclone.

Most prediction models currently have a Tropical Storm SANDY traveling to the west of Haiti directly over Jamaica, Cuba then the Bahamas on its way north. The higher elevations in Haiti could see rainfall over eight inches which will lead to likely flash floods and mudslides. In 2010 there were more than twelve deaths caused by Tropical Storm TOMAS which flooded most low lying regions in the Gand'Anse and Nord-Ouest.
