Hurricane SANDY headed to Jamaica and Cuba, could threaten Haiti with tropical storm conditions

HaitiAction.net - Port au Prince, Haiti — The tropical cyclone in the central Caribbean — Tropical Storm SANDY — is expected to reach Hurricane strength by the time it reaches Jamaica tomorrow. It is still possible that the hurricane could decide — yes, they do seem to have a mind of their own at times — to stay over open water and travel closer to Haiti's Navassa Island and the Windward Passage. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, Florida is forecasting a general heading of 020º NNE through Moore's Pen in Jamaica then on to Granma and Las Tunas regions in Cuba. If that is the case, Haiti could still see near tropical storm conditions from the outer rain bands.

Late season hurricanes can be rather unpredictable, SANDY is expected to see some southwesterly shear over the next 24 hours which could significantly weaken the weather system; it could also steer the cyclone over the previously mentioned Windward Passage route, which would mean that Haiti would experience more extreme conditions. For now the storm is still moving slowly which leads to both its unpredictability and more strengthening of its intensity.

The Martelly government was unable to effectively respond to the devastation caused by Tropical Storm Isaac which officially killed 34 people and caused widespread havoc wityh the IDPs in the camps. This lead to growing unrest with the government and demonstrations by pro-democracy activists. In response, thugs who are strong Martelly supporters have converged into death squads that have been shooting up Rue Tiremasse killing 5 or more every day for the last to weeks in an attempt to provoke the Bel-Air neighborhoods above the national palace.
