Will Hurricane Henri threaten Haiti this weekend?

Haiti Action.net - Port au Prince, Haiti - Haiti's 2009 hurricane season could see the first significant tropical cyclone this weekend when the tropical wave currently near the Mid-Atlantic NOAA weather buoy arrives in the Caribbean this week. The storm may dissipate over the next couple of days, similar to the previous tropical cyclones this season, but the current formation and outlook favor a strengthening past a tropical depression which will give this storm the name Tropical Storm Henri when it does.

This storm was expected to get the name GRACE but another weather system that, surprisingly, strengthened quickly in an unusual location for Atlantic tropical cyclones, got the name last night. Tropical Storm GRACE — moving NE between the Azores and UK — is expected to lose strength soon but has caused a stir in the English press and brought the concerns about the issues of global warming "closer to home" and may provide the issue with a Royal Welcome.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami states that there is now a thirty to fifty percent chance that this storm will become a tropical cyclone within the next 48 hours. If the storm continues on a WNW track the upper level winds will become unfavorable to further development and the storm will move away, north of Haiti. However, if this system takes a more westerly direction into the Caribbean — as some models predict — the conditions are "more favorable." (That is, if you happen to like tropical cyclones…)
