Storm GASTON still headed towards Haiti, expected to restrengthen soon

Haiti Action.net - Port au Prince, Haiti —The region of dry air to the southwest of the storm system was able to weaken Tropical Storm Gaston — centered near 14.4N 43.5W — but the system has retained its strong convection and is slowly making its way towards Haiti. The storm should make a close pass over the Mid-Atlantic weather buoy soon which could provide a more accurate assessment of wind strength, currently estimated to be near 27 mph.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami (NHC) claims that the system is imbedded within a region of deep layered moisture and gives it a 70% chance of strengthening back into a Tropical Storm within the next 48 hours. It expects it to, at least restrengthen into a tropical depression before tonight. A broad upper ridge should steer Storm Gaston directly west into the Caribbean for the next three days.

The broad upper ridge extending across Cuba combined with the abundance of tropical moisture and the "diffluence aloft" will generate an area of scattered showers and thunderstorms over the region. Port au Prince should remain clear today at 93º has a 40% chance of thunderstorms through Wednesday, September 8.

Another region of low pressure associated with another tropical wave — Invest 99 — near the Cape Verde Islands is also given a moderate chance, by the NHC, of developing into a tropical cyclone soon.
